One day I took a walk
Down wind of myself

So I took a plunge
In the river of God
Made me shiny, new, and clean
That blood red stream

My guilt and grime away
Carries my sin to the bottomless sea
Far as east from west each day
Thank you, Jesus
That river rushes mighty fast
Enough to take my breath away
But growing in the middle
Is an old, rugged cross
I hang to while I bathe
Sometimes I get splinters
That dig in pretty deep
But the gain's worth all my pain
To that river tree I cling
I'm hooked on that old river
I'm there at the crack of dawn
I took a fancy to starting each day

I don't get as smelly as I used to
Pieces of the tree live under my skin
